Background and Training of Practitioners

Training and certification at the Himalayan Institute is provided through the Hatha Yoga Teacher Certification Program. The basic training program is comprised of a combination of ongoing personal practice of hatha yoga, training in meditation, home study, a three-week intensive teacher training course conducted at sites throughout the United States as well as in India, practice and evaluation of teaching, a series of written assignments, and examinations. Home study courses focus on essential yoga philosophy, asana practice, science of breath, meditation, anatomy for yoga, and diet and nutrition. Candidates for admission to this teacher training program must have actively practiced hatha yoga for at least two years prior to application for training, including attendance at beginning and intermediate classes and regular daily practice of hatha yoga. Certification of teachers is valid for three years subject to a teacher’s meeting certain minimum requirements of teaching, study, and personal practice. In addition to its basic teacher training course, the Institute has recently introduced an Advanced Teacher’s Training Program, offered in Allahabad, India. There are currently more than 1,000 certified teachers trained by the Himalayan Institute worldwide.
