A recovery vision is not a function of one’s theory about the causes of mental illness.
Whether the causes of mental illness are viewed as biological and/or psychosocial generates considerable controversy among professionals, advocates, and consumers. Adopting a recovery vision does not commit one to either position on this debate, nor on the use or nonuse of medical interventions. People with adverse physical abnormalities (e.g., blindness, quadriplegia) can recover even though the physical nature of the illness is unchanged or even worsens.
