Measures Based on the Stage Model of Psychological Recovery
The model of psychological recovery we presented in Chapter 2 provides a framework for operationalizing the subjective experience of recovery. It describes the psychological process of recovery from the trauma of the illness, and focuses on positive outcomes. To recap, the model identifies four key psychological processes:
finding and maintaining hope; taking responsibility for one’s life; the re-establishment of a positive identity; and finding meaning and purpose in life. These processes take place over five stages of recovery: Moratorium, Awareness, Preparation, Rebuilding and Growth (Andresen, Oades and Caputi, 2003). Due to the highly personal nature of recovery, the model is purposely flexible in terms of the means by which the person moves through this process. That is, each individual finds his or her own sources of hope, ways of finding meaning and building a positive identity.
We have developed three measures based on the model. The measures are both subjective and non-prescriptive, focusing on positive psychological health .
