The recovery process is very complex, so is this an oversimplification?
The recovery process is indeed a complex and dynamic process – which is one of the reasons it is difficult to define, understand, research and experience! The stage model of psychological recovery, is just that – a model. That is, something taken from a better known domain (i.e. a composite of multiple people’s experience) and applied to a lesser known domain (i.e. the experience of an individual). The map, however, is not the territory. The model is parsimonious as feasibility of use has been considered. A four process by five stage model provides 20 possibilities on which to map experience. Any more complex and individuals, teams and systems would find it unwieldy.
