Vinyasa Yoga: The Yoga of Flowing, Connected Movement
Vinyasa Yoga is a style of yoga that can represent a variety of yoga practices. Vinyasa literally means “uninterrupted flow” in Sanskrit. What typically characterizes styles of yoga that call themselves Vinyasa is the flowing way in which the sequence of postures is connected.
In a Vinyasa Yoga class, each movement is often performed in a flowing sequence, without stopping and starting, with each movement executed in synch with the breath.
A number of styles of yoga incorporate this sense of connection and flow—such as Ashtanga Yoga, Jivamukti Yoga, and White Lotus Yoga. If you should see a class advertised as Vinyasa Yoga, check with the instructor to find out more about it so that you can understand better what the instructor has in mind regarding “uninterrupted flow”—some Vinyasa Yoga classes can be quite strenuous while others can be more relaxing and restorative.
